The Green Passport: Nationality & Travel

They hold a distinct green passport proclaiming 'Føroyar', but internationally, they are traveling as citizens of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Is there a separate Faroe Islands passport?

Short answer: Yes, but it is a variation of the Danish passport, not a completely separate citizenship. Faroese residents are legally Danish citizens. They hold a unique green passport (unlike Denmark's burgundy-red EU passport), which explicitly states they are from the Faroe Islands.

  • The Non-EU Status: Because the Faroe Islands are not in the European Union, their passport does not say "European Union" on the front. However, due to Nordic Passport Union agreements, they travel freely throughout Scandinavia.
  • Citizenship Law: There is no such thing as "Faroese Citizenship" in international law. You cannot naturalize as a Faroese citizen. You must naturalize as a Danish citizen, after which you have the right to claim the green Faroese passport if you legally reside there.
  • Global Power: The passport has the exact same visa-free global travel power as the standard Danish passport, routinely ranking in the top 5 most powerful globally.

It is entirely a matter of national pride. A Faroese person can legally choose to hold the standard Red Danish passport if they wish, but the vast majority opt for the Green one as a statement of identity.

How to Get One

If you are an American relocating to the Faroes, you do not get a Green passport upon arrival. You remain an American citizen living on a SIRI work or residency permit. To get the passport, you must complete the gruelling 9-year Danish naturalization process (including advanced Danish language exams), regardless of whether you live in Copenhagen or Tórshavn.

Top Misconceptions

  • Myth: The Faroese passport limits travel in Europe. Reality: False. Due to Denmark's status, Faroese citizens enjoy total freedom of movement in the EU and Schengen zone.
  • Myth: Getting married to a Faroese person immediately gets you a passport. Reality: Not even close. It grants you a family reunification residency permit. You still face years of waiting and language tests to earn citizenship.
