Relocating Without a Pre-Signed Contract

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: SIRI Application Specialist

You cannot simply arrive in Tórshavn with a suitcase and start handing out your resume. For non-Nordic citizens, a pre-signed contract is the only key to the country.

Can I move to the Faroe Islands before finding a job?

Short answer: No. If you are from the US, UK, Australia, or any non-EU/Nordic country, you must wait in your home country while your Faroese employer applies for your SIRI work permit. There is no such thing as a "Job Seeker Visa" for the Faroe Islands.

  • The SIRI Prerequisite: Your legal right to reside in the Faroe Islands is 100% attached to your specific employer. Without an employer sponsoring the AR3 form, you are just a tourist.
  • The 90-Day Tourist Rule: You can visit the Faroe Islands for up to 90 days (Schengen rules) to look for a job. However, if you find one, you generally must return to your home country while the visa is processed (1 to 3 months). You cannot legally start working while on a tourist visa.
  • Nordic Exceptionalism: If you hold a passport from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, or Iceland, you have total freedom of movement. You can fly in tomorrow, rent an apartment, and look for work indefinitely.

Attempting to bypass the system by working "cash-in-hand" jobs is a massive risk. The islands are tiny; everyone knows everyone, and the police (Politi) actively enforce immigration laws. Deportation results in a ban from the entire Schengen zone.

What if I am Wealthy? (The Retirement Myth)

Having a massive savings account does not bypass the system. The Danish/Faroese government does not offer retirement visas or citizenship-by-investment (Golden Visas). You cannot buy a house and declare residency. Your primary value to the state must be taxable labor.

Top Misconceptions

  • Myth: I'll just open my own business when I arrive. Reality: You cannot register a company (Sp/f) locally without a CPR number (Social Security equivalent) and a local bank account, both of which require a residency permit first.
  • Myth: It's easier if I arrive and talk to employers face-to-face. Reality: While networking is helpful, employers know the visa process is a nightmare. They will rarely sponsor a foreigner unless the foreigner has deep STEM or maritime engineering credentials.
