Itineraries and Vacation Packages (2 to 5 Days)

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: Faroese Logistics Coordinator

Because the Faroe Islands are brutally expensive and weather-dependent, optimizing your daily itinerary is hyper-critical. You cannot afford to waste a 300 DKK tunnel toll driving the wrong direction in the fog.

How many days do you need in the Faroe Islands?

Short answer: 4 to 5 full days is the absolute sweet spot. This allows you to explore the three main central islands (Vágar, Streymoy, and Eysturoy), with one day dedicated exclusively to the Northern Isles or the Mykines puffin colony.

  • Self-Drive vs Packages: The Faroe Islands are incredibly easy to navigate if you rent a car. However, local agencies like Faroe Incoming, Make Travel, and 62N offer excellent "Self-Drive Packages" where they pre-book your rental car, all hotels, and ferry tickets for one lump sum, saving massive logistical headaches.
  • The 2-Day Layover: If you only have 48 hours (e.g., stopping over between Iceland and Europe), do not spread out. Spend Day 1 entirely on Vágar (Múlafossur, Trælanípa) since the airport is there, and Day 2 exploring Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur.
  • Weather Fluidity: NEVER lock your itinerary in stone. If your schedule says "Hike Kalsoy on Tuesday", but Tuesday is 25m/s winds and zero visibility fog—you must pivot. Always check landsverk.fo for live road webcams before setting out.

The Ultimate 5-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1: Vágar (The Iconic Arrival)

Land at FAE. Pick up rental car. Drive 10 minutes to the trailhead for Trælanípa (the lake above the ocean). In the afternoon, drive to the village of Gásadalur to photograph the Múlafossur waterfall. Drive through the sub-sea tunnel to Tórshavn and check into your hotel.

Day 2: Northern Streymoy

Drive roughly 45 minutes north from Tórshavn. Visit the black sand beach at Tjørnuvík, looking out at the "Giant and the Hag" sea stacks. In the afternoon, drive down the narrow, terrifyingly beautiful road to the turf-roofed amphitheater village of Saksun.

Day 3: The Golden Circle of Eysturoy

Drive through the new underwater jellyfish roundabout (Eysturoyartunnilin). Head to the village of Gjógv, famous for its natural sea gorge. Have lunch at Gjáargarður. In the afternoon, drive the winding mountain pass to Funningur, finishing the day in the Viking settlement of Leirvík.

Day 4: Kalsoy (The James Bond Island)

Drive to Klaksvík. Take the morning car ferry to Kalsoy. Hike out to the Kallur Lighthouse (famous from the James Bond film No Time to Die). Visit the Seal Woman statue in Mikladalur. Take the ferry back to Klaksvík for dinner at Fríða Kaffihús.

Day 5: Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur

Spend the morning exploring the capital, Tórshavn. Walk through the narrow red-wood alleys of Tinganes (the historic parliament). In the afternoon, drive 15 minutes to Kirkjubøur, the most important historical site in the Faroes, featuring an unfinished 13th-century cathedral and a 900-year-old wooden farmhouse.
