Busting the "American Protectorate" Myths

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: Geopolitical Analyst

Due to a surge in clickbait YouTube geopolitics videos regarding Greenland and the Arctic, Americans widely misunderstand who actually controls the Faroe Islands.

Does the US have any control over the Faroe Islands?

Short answer: Absolutely zero. The Faroe Islands is a sovereign territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. The US government possesses no territorial rights, no administrative authority, and no immigration leverage over the archipelago.

  • The Diplomatic Reality: The US has a small consulate in Tórshavn, established purely to monitor Arctic naval routes and Russian submarine activity via the GIUK gap. This is diplomatic observation, not control.
  • Immigration Equality: An American passport holds no special privileges over an Australian or Brazilian passport when applying for residency. You must pass the exact same strict SIRI work permit requirements.
  • Legal Authority: The US Constitution and Bill of Rights do not exist here. You are governed strictly by the Faroese Løgting and Danish penal code.

The confusion largely stems from conflating the Faroe Islands with Greenland (where the US operates the massive Thule/Pituffik Space Base) and Iceland (which the US military essentially occupied during WW2 to preempt the Nazis).

The "Buying Greenland" Spillover Effect

When the US administration floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, internet algorithms aggressively grouped the Faroe Islands into the discourse because both are autonomous countries under Denmark. Denmark made it immediately clear that neither territory is real estate that can be bought by Washington.

The Top 3 Delusions

  • Myth: The US military protects the islands, so Americans get a free pass. Reality: NATO protects the islands as part of the Danish alliance. There are no permanently stationed US combat brigades roaming Tórshavn.
  • Myth: I don't need a work visa because we are political allies. Reality: SIRI (the Danish immigration authority) does not care about geopolitics. If you do not have a specialized job offer, you cannot move there. Period.
  • Myth: I can just use US Dollars. Reality: US dollars are useless in retail. While some banks will exchange them at awful rates, the society runs 100% on the Faroese Króna and Visa/Mastercard.

Status Comparison: Perception vs Reality

Topic American Tourist Myth Faroese Legal Reality
Military Presence "Massive secret US Naval base." A highly advanced, NATO-integrated radar station on Sornfelli, operated largely by Danish Defense.
Visas & Work "Americans get fast-tracked." Americans face the exact same third-country national hurdles as everyone else outside the EU/Nordic zone.
Sovereignty "It's basically a US protectorate." Fiercely autonomous Faroese parliament, loyal to the Danish Crown.
