Geopolitics: The US Territory Myth

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: Geopolitical Analyst

Despite increasing American geopolitical interest in the Arctic, the Faroe Islands are entirely sovereign under the Danish Crown. The United States has zero territorial claim.

Is the Faroe Islands a US state or territory?

Short answer: No. It is an autonomous, self-governing nation within the Kingdom of Denmark. It operates its own parliament (the Løgting) and controls its own domestic policies. The United States does not own, administer, or govern the Faroe Islands in any capacity.

  • The Defense Agreement: Denmark handles foreign policy and defense for the Faroe Islands. Due to NATO alliances, the US operates a strategic radar installation at Sornfelli, but this is a leased military presence, not an assertion of territorial ownership.
  • World War II: The confusion stems from WW2. While the US occupied Greenland and Iceland, the British occupied the Faroe Islands (Operation Valentine) to preempt Nazi Germany. None of these occupations resulted in American annexation.
  • You cannot use US passports or US currency as domestic items. You must pass through international Danish customs.

Because Greenland (another constituent country of Denmark) frequently appears in US news regarding "strategic purchases" (e.g., the 2019 Trump administration proposal), the digital algorithm frequently conflates the Faroe Islands into the same conversation. Neither is for sale.

The 2020 Pivot

In 2020, the US State Department opened a physical diplomatic post in Tórshavn. However, this was explicitly designed to monitor Russian/Chinese Arctic naval movements and counter Huawei's dominance in 5G infrastructure, not to assert territorial control. It functions as a consulate within the sovereign territory of another nation.

Top Geopolitical Misconceptions

  • Myth: Since the US has a radar base there, it's a US protectorate. Reality: The US operates bases in Germany and Japan as well. This is a NATO alliance structure, not ownership.
  • Myth: I don't need a passport to visit because it's like Puerto Rico. Reality: You absolutely need a US Passport to board a flight to Vágar (FAE). You are entering the border control of a foreign European country.
