English Teaching Jobs: A Harsh Reality

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: Faroese Education Board Analyst

Unlike Japan, Spain, or Korea, the Faroe Islands has zero demand for ESL expats. The population is already functionally bilingual in English from birth, and the public school system is entirely closed to non-Faroese speakers.

Are there English teaching jobs in the Faroe Islands?

Short answer: Practically none. There are no private ESL academies, and you cannot be hired as a public school teacher without a legally recognized Faroese/Danish pedagogical degree and total fluency in the Faroese language.

  • The Fluency Factor: English television and movies are never dubbed in the Faroe Islands; they are subtitled. Because of this, Faroese children speak near-native English by age 10. There is no market for "conversational English tutors."
  • Public School Certification: The Faroese education system (Fólkaskúlin) is highly regulated. Teachers must possess a recognized teaching degree (Lærari). An American TEFL or CELTA certificate is completely worthless in the public sector.
  • No Visa Pathway: Because teaching English is not an in-demand profession, SIRI will unequivocally reject any work visa application based on being an ESL tutor.

The Substitute Teacher Loophole (EU Citizens Only)

If you are an EU/Nordic citizen (meaning you do not need visa sponsorship) and you happen to live in a very tiny, remote Faroese village, there is a micro-chance you could be hired as a substitute teacher (Vikar) for lower-grade English classes if the school happens to be desperate.

However, this is hourly, unreliable work. The moment a credentialed Faroese teacher applies for the job, you will be replaced. And if you are American or British (post-Brexit), you cannot use a substitute job to apply for residency anyway.

Alternative Education Careers

Alternative Path Viability
University Guest Lecturing Possible if you hold a Ph.D. in a highly specific scientific field (like marine biology). You would teach in English at Fróðskaparsetur Føroya.
Digital Nomad ESL Online Legally impossible. The Faroe Islands do not offer a Digital Nomad Visa. You cannot move there just to teach VIPKid or Cambly online.
