Indian Expats: The Rise of Tech & Marine Engineering

Updated: March 2026 | Reviewed by: SIRI Immigration Adjudicator

Unlike the massive diaspora in the UK or Canada, the Indian community in the Faroe Islands is small but highly specialized, driving the critical IT and marine engineering sectors.

How can an Indian citizen get a job in the Faroe Islands?

Short answer: Through highly specialized STEM roles. The easiest pathway for an Indian passport holder is securing a contract as a software developer, data analyst, or marine engineer with a massive Faroese corporation (like Bakkafrost, Føroya Tele, or Smyril Line) which operates entirely in English internally.

  • The Corporate Backdoor: If you are hired for a high-level tech/engineering role, the company does not care if you can't speak Faroese. They will sponsor your SIRI work visa through the Pay Limit Scheme or Positive List.
  • No Job Seeker Visa: You cannot come to Tórshavn on a tourist visa and drop off resumes. You must secure the job offer from India, apply for the visa at the VFS Global center (usually in New Delhi or Mumbai), and wait 1-3 months for approval.
  • Manual Labor Pivot: A smaller subset of Indian expats work in the booming aquaculture and fish processing factories. This requires applying directly to factory HR departments; agencies cannot legally secure these visas for you in advance.

Salaries vs Cost of Living

The transition is often an economic shock. A typical software engineer in Tórshavn might earn 45,000 DKK per month (approx. 550,000 INR). While this sounds astronomically high, the cost of living is equally extreme. Taxes consume nearly 40% of that instantly, and renting a simple 1-bedroom apartment can cost 7,000 DKK.

However, the work-life balance (standard 37-hour work week, 5 weeks of mandatory paid vacation) is unparalleled compared to corporate India.

Community Reality

Aspect Reality Check
Food & Integration There are no large Indian supermarkets here. Finding specific spices requires ordering from Denmark. The local diet is heavily focused on fermented lamb, fish, and potatoes.
Bringing Family If you hold a professional Work Permit, bringing your spouse and children via Family Reunification is generally straightforward and approved cleanly by SIRI.
